Description - Reading Smoke- "The Art of Reading Smoke" is a dynamic, interactive course designed to sharpen a firefighter's most critical situational awareness skill: interpreting smoke conditions. Based on the groundbreaking work of fire service veteran Dave Dodson and presented by seasoned instructor Scott McFarland, this class will guide students through the principles and real-time application of smoke reading to improve fireground decision-making.
Participants will develop a solid foundation in basic fire behavior and learn a proven 4-step process for reading smoke. Through case studies, photos, and video simulations, students will be challenged to evaluate smoke indicators to determine:
The fire’s location
The stage of fire development
The potential for a hostile fire event (e.g., flashover, backdraft)
Clues related to structural stability
Tactical and strategic options based on smoke characteristics
Whether you're a new firefighter or a veteran officer, this course will enhance your ability to make faster, smarter decisions on the fireground. Students will leave with the tools and confidence to apply their smoke reading skills immediately during initial size-ups and evolving incidents.
Guest Speaker Bio - Scott McFarland is a seasoned fire service professional with over three decades of experience in emergency response, leadership, and training. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Business Management from the University of Northern Iowa and a Fire Science Certificate from Des Moines Area Community College.
Scott has dedicated 31 years to the West Des Moines Fire Department, rising through the ranks from Firefighter to Driver/Operator, Lieutenant, and ultimately Deputy Chief. Throughout his career, he has played a key role in department operations, personnel development, and emergency scene management.
For the past 20 years, Scott has served as a respected Instructor with the Fire Service Training Bureau (FSTB) and Professional Rescue Innovations (PRI), where he shares his expertise in fireground tactics, technical rescue, and leadership with the next generation of fire service professionals.
