Altoona Fire Department responded to a residential structure fire. Fire Attack crews once inside had encountered redevelopment issues due to wind driven fire conditions and introduction of new flow paths. We had data based on the fire investigation that will aid in recognition of flow paths, wind driven fires and the dangers associated with them.

    1230-1400: Evolutions

    Stations Overview -
The station topics isolate specific skills that firefighters may have to utilize during the evolutions. Each fast paced station will have at least two instructors and allow for 20-30 minutes of practice for participants. The goal is to help you refine your techniques for various challenges, while facilitating learning from each other. There will be two groups within each station for you to choose from. Group 1 is the 'Open Gym' group. This group will be presented with a problem or scenario, and asked to solve it using any technique they see fit. Group 2 is the 'instructional' group. The instructor leading this group will teach a specific technique. To provide a clear picture of how the stations will flow, let's look at the Dirty Drag station below.

    - Group 1:

    • Challenge #1: move an unconscious victim up a flight of stairs

    • Challenge #2: move an unconscious victim down a flight of stairs

    • Challenge #3: move an unconscious victim through the designated path that contains realistic obstacles

    - Group 2:

    • Leg lock

    • Leg lock variations

    • If time allows, arm lock

    • If time allows, victim flips (prone to supine)

    Lunch -

Lunch is 30 minutes long. Please note that lunch is not provided, so bring your own sack lunch.

    Evolutions -

In his book On Combat, Dave Grossman discusses how heart rate impacts performance, with conditions yellow (115 bpm), red (145 bpm), and gray (175 bpm) being optimal for various levels of response. While we can't replicate the emotional stress of finding a victim in a live fire environment, we can create physical stress by elevating your heart rate. Evolutions will be divided into two parts:

    • Part 1: Designed to raise your heart rate using a mix of firefighting and functional fitness movements.

    • Part 2: Search & Rescue Evolution.

    Safety Protocol -

Due to the high-intensity nature of the evolutions, we will be implementing a Rehab Protocol to ensure participant safety.
